Guide

What makes an X account work for a local business?

X’s own basics: a recognizable profile image, a bio that says why to follow, posts written like a text message, and a clear call to action.

What X says

  1. Profile image, header, bio

An image people recognize as your brand, a header used like a billboard for what is new, and a bio that says what you do and why to follow.

  2. Write like a text message

    Real, conversational and concise.

  3. Add media

An image, a video, a GIF or a poll, from the icons under the post.

  4. One or two hashtags

If you use them at all. Avoid all caps, and put an emoji at the end if you want to add emotion.

  5. A clear call to action

Where it fits, such as Visit our site.

  6. Engage with other accounts

Like, repost, reply, mention and message. X says that builds relationships and makes your account easier to discover.

  7. Share your handle

On your website, your cards and your email signature, and give people a reason to follow by posting frequently.

  8. Support in the open

Support hours on the profile, a prompt reply even if only to say you have seen the post, and anything personal moved to a direct message.

What Google says

Counts toward ranking?
No. Google lists five actions that improve local ranking, and activity on social media is not one of them. The platform sends people to you; the listing is what ranks.

What we do

  1. The short form of a story

Copy to other platforms turns a Facebook or blog post into an X draft trimmed to the length.

  2. Two or three a week

X rewards frequency more than the other platforms on this list, so short posts fit once the channel is connected.

  3. Coming soon on the card

The X card on Set up socials says so until the connection is live; the playbook applies the day it is.
